Jersey’s Postage Stamps
The channel island of Jersey has been issuing stamps since 1st October 1969, and from that day British stamps were no longer valid here. During the German occupation 1940-1945 the British stamps ran out and locally manufactured stamps were issued.
The Jersey stamps from the years 1969-1987 will be on display from 2nd October to 14th November.
Monaco’s Postage Stamps
From 2nd October 1995 to 2nd January 1996 the museum is showing a selection of Monegasque stamps from the years 1971-1991. During the same period you still have the opportunity to see stamps from Sweden – see the mention in the last number of the MuseumsPosten.
Danish Provincial Series
Every year during the period 1974-1981, Denmark issued a series of for-five stamps with motifs from different parts of Denmark, in total 34 different series which were all engraved by Czeslaw Slania and printed in multi-coloured steel engraving in the Post & Telegraph Service’s stamp printing house.
The originators of the series were graphic artist Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen and his son Alan Havsteen-Mikkelsen, and the museum is displaying workshop drawings as well as engravings, colour samples, and finished stamps. We are also showing other examples of stamps designed by Havsteen-Mikkelsen such as the ships series, the series featuring Danish architecture, and the fresco series from the years 1970-73. The exhibition period is from 2nd October 1995 to 31st March 1996.
Hong Kong’s Postage Stamps
On the occasion of Prince Joachim’s marriage to Alexandra Manley on 18th November 1995 the Post & Telegraph Museum is exhibiting its catalogue collection of stamps from the British colony of Hong Kong.
The island of Hong Kong off the south east coast of China was occupied by troops from the British East India Company on 26th January 1841 to become the new domicile of 2,000 British citizens, who had been driven away from Canton. Hong Kong has been British ever since, and in 1861 it was agreed with China to rent the entire colony for 99 years which means that Hong Kong will again become part of China in two years’ time.
Hong Kong has had their own stamps since 1862, only interrupted by a period with Japanese stamps during the occupation in 1941-1945. The collection is on display from 16th November to end March 1996.
Jordan’s Postage Stamps
From 4th January to and including 31st March 1996, the journey goes to the kingdom of Jordan in the Middle East. We are exhibiting the country’s stamps from the years 1920-90.
Norway’s Postage Stamps
From 4th January to 30th June 1996 all stamps from the years 1855-1995 will be on display.
Special Exhibition of Christmas Seals
The annual exhibition of Christmas seals will take place during the period 25th Nnovember-31st December 1995 on the 4th floor of the Post & Telegraph Museum. This year we are focusing on the Christmas seals from 1923-31 and as usual we are able to show many fine drafts and drawings, proofs and variants from Andrea Stougaard’s collection (mentioned in the MuseumsPosten no. 3, 1994).
Moreover, as mentioned under “Donations to the Museum” we will show a beautiful little oil painting, which was the motif of the 1923 seal, as well as a selection of the impressive collection of Denmark’s Christmas Seal Collectors’ Association’s own charity stamps from the years 1948-94 which were all sold to the benefit of the National Society for the Fight against Tuberculosis. This collection also contains many beautiful drawings.
