Chemist Hoffmeyer and Grenaa Telephone Company
By Lars Heide
In 1878, chemist Niels Frederik Hoffmeyer (1835-1910) took the initiative in founding Grenaa Telephone Association and was afterwards active in the collaboration between the telephone companies in the towns of Jutland. In 1895, he was head of the amalgamation of 17 telephone companies into the Jutland Telephone Company Ltd., of which he was chairman until his death.
Hoffmeyer was a qualified chemist. He came to the town of Grenaa and took over the pharmacy in 1867. The chemist was one of the central figures of the provincial town. Hoffmeyer was active and extrovert. He was a town councillor and made important achievements as a co-founder of the chamber of commerce, the popinjay shooting society, and the secondary school. He was working on getting a railway to the town. In those years, railway and associations were important contributions to the citizens’ perception of their town as modern and dynamic.
